Most of us gringos have trouble trilling our r’s and especially the Spanish rr’s. Everything I’ve been able to find says practicing this tongue twister over, over and over is the best advice I can find. I’m open for any other suggestions!
Erre con Erre Cigarro
Erre con Erre Barril
Rápido corre el carro
Repleto do ferro en el ferrocarril
Here’s another tongue twister I found just for fun.
Pablito clavó un clavito
Que clavito clavó Pablito
I actually found a news article about it -
The secret behind Beyonce’s Latin crossover hit
I did this exercise with her, “Erre con erre cigarro, erre con erre barril, rapido corren los carros.” She’d be laughing, and I’m like, “Beyonce, trust me, do this.” She stands there literally sometimes six hours nonstop in front of the microphone trying to get this right. That’s why she’s a superstar.
It must work! In case your wondering here’s Beyonce’s album Imprescindible on iTunes and for those that don’t have iTunes. Beyonce on Amazon MP3. Click on the link to hear a few seconds of it. Spanish is everywhere and everyone is learning it.

1Too bad there isn’t some audio to go along with it so I know what it’s supposed to sound like!

2I found a video on youtube with almost the same verses, but being said by a white girl that wasn’t doing very well. If you see or hear of one, it would be great to throw it up here.

3I don’t want to plug anything, but try following these steps: http://spanish-only.blogspot.com/2008/03/how-to-roll-your-r.html
I had the same problem, but after some research I found out that the problem of most people is that their tongue isn’t strong enough to trill like it should, so you should make it stronger and placing it correct in your mouth (see step one of the site). Try it, and then (at the fourth step of the link I’ve provided) try saying this: http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/sounds/index.asp?sound=235

4Thanks for commenting on my blog, Daily Adventures in a Semi-Boring Life. It is truly appreciated. I had 3 years of Spanish in high school, but I remember very little. Growing up in South Dakota I never really had the chance to use the language. I did enjoy your little tongue twisters!

5Yeah, all good tips. I didn’t know that about Beyoncé. LOL. There’s some audio and some visual over at this link:

It can seem a little technical but it may be of help to some people.

6Yup. Very specific and very technical. For me, on some words like Carro, it’s easier to vibrate the back of my throat like a grrrrrr instead of trilling my tongue behind my teeth. That’s the part that I’m having to practice on.
Saying it right, instead of easy.

7Wayne; try not to do that. I’m Dutch and for Dutch I trill my r’s in my throat. But for Spanish it’s NOT correct at all, and it sounds weird to Spaniards. I had a hard time trilling my r’s with my tongue, but I pulled it off with a lot of practicing.

8Thanks, I’ll keep working on it.
